The Story

For the American born daughter of two immigrants to become a multiple award winning entrepreneur, political strategist, advocate, leader, and speaker in politics, government, non-profits, and business did not come without challenges for Atima.

Like many Black women and other women of color she encountered everything from microaggressions to explicit racism, sexism, and xenophobia in life, school, and the workplace. She processed it like many of her generation would initially, thinking if only she worked “twice as hard”, perhaps her managers would not cut her off in meetings, refuse to give her a raise, or undermine and question her leadership. She finally realized that there was no way to be a more “palatable” version of herself, that would be acceptable to others without destroying the person she fundamentally was. After 2020, she heard from other women of color friends and colleagues who had similar experiences and frustrations and out of this experience Embracing Your Voice was born.

Why Choose Us

Choosing Us for Your Listening Pleasure

If you’ve attended entrepreneur and/or professional development workshops or conferences but still come away feeling as if there were things missing related to your personal and professional experiences this is the podcast for you. We center women of color in discussions about navigating the workplace, building careers, across multiple industries and ways to succeed and deal with challenges and systemic biases while doing so.

Since 2020 in particular there has been a lot of talk especially in the last few years about the experience of women of color at work and in society. Women of color are:

only 6% of C suite leadership in America’s largest companies.

They are 9.2% of the Members of Congress.

The gender wage gap is even wider for women of color than it is for white women.

Multiple studies have indicated that the obstacles women of color face in the workplace like limited access to mentors, exclusion from elite networks, and wage gaps often push us to find alternatives to the traditional workforce like entrepreneurship.
